Fynn Shipman

I am a student studying at the University of Edinburgh. I aspire to become a Biotechnologist. I believe that cooperation is one of the most important science skills, as scientific breakthroughs are always a group effort.

Anytime I moved, first to Taiwan, later the UK, I moved by myself without my parents. Since the age of 15, I've had to acclimate to different situations rapidly. This experience cultivated my ability to quickly grasp new concepts—a skill essential for navigating diverse environments abroad and excelling academically.

Ever since I was young I had an interest in science. I started working as a data manager at 16yo for pharmaceutical companies, gaining critical insight clinical trials are conducted and all the roles people have

in them. During the summer of 2024, I interned for two months at the Centre of New Technologies, where we focused on modifying mRNA for pharmaceutical purposes. In the meantime also learned a lot about working in R&D, financing research, the differences between public and private investment, scientific journals, how papers are published, and how to network and excel in a scientific career.

My university course has taught me various skills, such as coding, data management and more. I got to improve my laboratory skills thanks to regular practicals. It has been critical for my development, as thanks to those sessions I’ve massively expanded on what I previously knew. This practice allowed me to become a much more competent laboratory technician. Our hands-on practicals taught us data collection methods and how to distribute the workload equally. This experience enhanced my understanding of teamwork and provided valuable lessons I will carry into future projects. All of my hard work was awarded with a high average grade of 78%.

I speak multiple languages. I've always had plenty of interest in different cultures, and following that interest, I always made sure to learn the people's languages. I currently speak English and Polish at a fluent level, as well as Chinese at an Upper-Intermediate level and Russian at a beginner level.

I love to challange myself to do difficult things. This website offers a unique opportunity for me to gain hands-on experience and contribute to the dynamic landscape of Biological Sciences. Using modern communication tools, such as social media, I hope to spread the knowledge and joy of science to a wide audience, while learning how to manage a team, run a company and most importantly learn how to communicate my thoughts and knowledge effectively in a written and spoken form.
